Vitamin D and Bone Health
The when and why of vitamin D supplementation.
Is vitamin D the cure for all that ails you? According to the headlines, the vitamin—also known as the “sunshine pill”— goes beyond benefit to the bones, with the potential to ease migraines, help hives, and prevent strokes as well as lower cholesterol. Adding to these claims, a recent study presented at the World Congress on Osteoporosis (April 2014) bolsters news for bones with findings that show long-term vitamin D insufficiency was associated with a greater 10-year risk of having a hip or osteoporotic (bone disease) fracture in elderly women.
