A study published in the American Journal of Medicine (July 2017) identified certain lifestyle factors that increase and decrease risk for hospitalization for sciatica. The long sciatic nerve, which originates in the lower spine and extends down the leg, can get compressed or irritated from different causes (such as a herniated disk), resulting in pain and numbness.
