Acupuncture is increasingly being embraced as a nondrug treatment for chronic pain.

Suffering with chronic pain from arthritis, back problems and other medical conditions can make people desperate for relief. Pain medications may seem like an obvious choice. But they are not always the best first step. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can have side effects, especially when taken chronically. And opioid drugs can be addictive.
