Coping With Foot, Ankle Arthritis

With the right medication, orthotics, exercise, and weight control, you can take a giant step toward relieving lower-extremity pain.

You don’t have to be a pro football player, prima ballerina, or world-class figure skater in order to traumatize the bones, muscles, and soft tissues in your feet and ankles. People do it every day—falling off stepladders, running to catch a bus, or just taking a stroll around the block. In most cases, you’ll recover over time with no serious after-effects. Not uncommonly, however, the trauma can eventually take its toll in the form of osteoarthritis (OA).
