Indoor Temperatures and Humidity Impact Osteoarthritis Symptoms
Shifts of temperature or humidity can change the flow of fluids in the joints and increase joint stiffness and pain. Sudden cooling and increases in humidity can cause joint symptoms. A January 2026 study published in Building and Environment followed 28 older adults with osteoarthritis for one year and recorded joint symptoms and indoor climate conditions. Temperature drops affected joint symptoms within three days, and humidity changes affected symptoms within four days. Women are more sensitive to sudden cold than men. Generally, people under age 70 are more sensitive to temperature changes and people over 70 are more sensitive to humidity. This study recommends maintaining indoor temperatures between 59 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and humidity between 47% and 81% to minimize joint symptoms for people with osteoarthritis.
