Chondrocalcinosis, also known as pseudogout, can be extremely painful. It is caused by a buildup of calcium pyrophosphate crystals in joints that can cause pain, stiffness, swelling and inflammation most commonly in the knees, hands, wrists, shoulders, hips, elbows and ankles. Symptoms are similar to gout, which most often affects the big toe, but they have different causes.
