Statistics tell the story: 25 percent of people who suffer a hip fracture are forced to live in a nursing home for at least a year after their injury….75 percent of those who sustain a hip fracture are women….The older you get, the more likely you-man or woman-are to fracture a hip….People 85 and older are 10 to 15 times more likely to break a hip than those 60-65….And, the most frightening number of all, 20 percent of people who suffer a hip fracture die within a year. There is one other number-90-that has both good and bad implications. Ninety percent of hip fractures are caused by falls, but falls are preventable and are not an inevitable part of aging.
