Ergonomics is a science focused on designing and arranging objects and environments so people can interact with them efficiently and safely. Many people use computers, laptops, tablets, televisions and phones for work, to stay connected with friends and family and for entertainment. As our time on screens increases, poor ergonomics can lead to avoidable pain and stiffness. “Posture and ergonomics are part of reducing pain,” says Cleveland Clinic physical therapist Chrysta Blechschmid, PT DPT. “We can’t necessarily prevent arthritis, but we can at least reduce some stress on the joints. The key with ergonomics is to reduce any kind of muscle tension or stress.”
