Comparison of Surgical Techniques for Treatment of a Painful and Arthritic Thumb

Arthritis in the joint at the base of the thumb is common in older people and causes pain and impaired hand function. When splinting and anti-inflammatory medications are not sufficient, surgeons have a range of techniques to address this problem. The January 2026 Journal of Hand Surgery Global Online published a review of research on surgical treatment options including joint replacement and surgical procedures to the tendons, ligaments and nerves. The study found no clearly superior technique when it comes to pain relief, physical function, patient reported outcomes, range of motion or strength. The authors conclude that they prefer some specific methods for removing the trapezius bone at the base of the thumb to maximize function and minimize complications.
