In 2025 a new treatment option gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for people with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who have not responded to other treatments. “The approval of vagus nerve stimulation for RA represents a disruptive advance in our therapeutic paradigm,” says Cleveland Clinic rheumatologist Leonard Calabrese, D.O. “It shifts us from exclusive reliance on disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) for immunosuppression toward targeted nerve modulation using an implanted device.”
