Gout is an acute inflammatory arthritis caused by monosodium urate crystals in the joint. Most often it strikes the joint at the base of the big toe, but it also can affect other joints. “A damaged joint might be especially susceptible to a gout attack, ” says Cleveland Clinic rheumatologist Chad Deal, MD. Painful attacks typically last a week or two, but changes to your diet and medication can help treat and prevent symptoms.
