Choosing foods that are harder to overeat can help avoid over-consumption. “Self-limiting foods are typically in their natural or simply prepared state and prevent over-consumption because they are high in fiber or have simple flavors,” says Cleveland Clinic dietitian Julia Zumpano, RD. “These are foods the body won’t consume in excess.” The way a food is prepared can transform a self-limiting food into a highly ­palatable food that is easy to over-eat.
