The news about eating a diet high in refined carbohydrates continues to get worse. According to research published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (August 2015), refined carbohydrates, such as white rice, white bread and sugar, have been linked to an increased risk for new-onset depression in postmenopausal women. The study showed that refined carbohydrates trigger a hormonal response that tells the body to reduce blood sugar levels, resulting in fatigue, mood changes and depressive symptoms.
