Q. I had hyperparathyroidism that resulted in osteoporosis. I had my parathyroid removed but wonder if there is anything that could help the body absorb calcium to improve my bone mineral density.

Hyperparathyroidism can cause the parathyroid to signal bones to release too much calcium into the blood. This weakens the bones and may cause osteoporosis. Removal of the parathyroid treats the condition, but it does not cure osteoporosis.
