Hip fractures are more likely to occur in older adults, but they are not inevitable. Regardless of your age, making a few changes in your diet, starting or restarting an exercise program, and taking steps at home to prevent falls can significantly improve your bone health and keep you from becoming another hip fracture statistic. Almost 75 percent of hip fractures occur in women and 25 percent of hip fractures in people over 50 occur in men. The risk goes up among those 65 and older. Osteoporosis-porous bones-is a factor in 90 percent of all hip fractures.
