In November 2022 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published an updated guideline on how and when to prescribe opioids for pain. This replaces a guideline issued in 2016 which included specific limits on the duration and dosages of opioids. While guidelines are voluntary, the 2016 guideline resulted in the adoption of new policies and laws that restricted the use of opioids.
