When the thick tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot from the heel to the toes becomes inflamed, it is 1) painful and 2) hard to heal. The condition is also hard to pronounce. The tissue is the plantar fascia, and the condition is plantar fasciitis (plantar fashee-eye-tis). No one knows for sure how or why it develops, but plantar fasciitis affects women more often than men, as well as people who are overweight, have flat feet, or work in a job that requires walking or standing on a hard surface.
