Treating Low Back Pain

For almost everyone with low back pain, treatment starts conservatively with nondrug therapies.

For longstanding low back pain, the guidelines suggest exercise (guided by a physical therapist), acupuncture, mindfulness-based stress reduction, tai chi, yoga, progressive relaxation, cognitive behavioral therapy, spinal manipulation and other suchmodalities. The authors advise getting these therapies from appropriately trained professionals, such as physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, licensed acupuncturists, and psychotherapists.
