Q. I have arthritis and I’m thinking about taking an omega-3 supplement. Will this help?
A
There’s no doubt that omega-3s (short for omega-3 fatty acids) are good for you. In fact, they are essential. The body needs omega-3s to function properly but can’t make them. They must come from food. Omega-3s have a role in brain function, growth and development, and heart health. They also have anti-inflammatory effects. There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosatetraenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fish contain EPA and DHA, and plant sources, mostly nuts and seeds, have ALA.
